The Darling Marine Center has a fleet of boats available for charter including two 16' skiffs and three custom-build uninspected research vessels: 23' Silversides, 26' Nucella and 42" Ira C. A full-time Captain operates the two largest vessels, and oversees all vessel operations to ensure safety. Users of the smaller boats must meet minimum DMC and University of Maine certification requirements.

Launched in 2000, the Ira C. is the flagship of the DMC fleet. Based on a traditional Maine lobster boat, it has a 42' fiberglass Wesmac hull with a stretched and split wheelhouse. A large open deck and counter/lab space in the wheelhouse make the Ira C. a stable and versatile platform for teaching and research projects along the Maine coast. The Ira C. can carry up to 24 students.

The Nucella was custom built for us by Winninghoff Boats, Rowley, MA. With an aluminum semi-vee hull, cabin and open deck, dive door and twin outboards, she is an efficient and stable platform for estuarine and near shore scuba research. The Nucella is operated out of the Darling Marine Center from May-October. The aft deck measures 7' x 9" and the main cabin has two 2.5' x 3' shelves (upper and lower) and a 1.51 x 4' work bench/seat on the port side.
